Field Day 2011
ARRL Field Day Locator
What is it?
Field Day is an annual emergency preparedness excercise that allows ham radio
operators to test their emergency skills. The event also serves to raise
awareness about the Amateur Radio Service. The goal is to simulate emergency
conditions by setting up "in the field" and operate using emergency power and to
make contact with as many other Field Day stations as possible.
The Vienna Wireless Society participates in this event every year and sets up
in Burke Lake Park, in Fairfax County, Virginia. Operators set up stations that
run off of battery and generator power and use antennas strung over trees or
portable masts.
The Vienna Wireless Field Day operation will be class 4A. The setup will
consist of two morse code, two voice, as well as a VHF station and a "Get on the
Air" station for visitors to try their hand at operating. A detailed map of the
Field Day site is available here.
When is it?
Operations will commence at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 25th and continue until
2:00pm on Sunday, June 26th 2011.
Who is invited?
Anyone and everyone, young and old, are encouraged to come visit the Vienna
Wireless Society Field Day site. If you're an experienced operator and want to
come help operate, please do! If you're new to the hobby, or know nothing about
it, this is a fantastic opportunity to come learn more about it and see hams in
action!
How do I get there?
Burke Lake Park is located on Route 123 (Ox Road) just south of intersection
of 123 with Route 7100 (Fairfax County Parkway). A map of the area is available
here.
If approaching from the North on 123, you will pass the Burke Lake Golf Course
entrance on your left, and the next left is the entrance to the park. When you
turn into the park, the Field Day site will be located IMMEDIATELY on
your left, before you reach the guardhouse inside the entrance.
